Term 5: Blue Planet

Our Term 5 class topic is Blue Planet. In English, we will be writing stories in order to develop our use of description, punctuation and use of dialogue. This will be based upon an amazing picture book called The Whale.

 

We will also be learning about the science of our planet’s oceans including examining the seven life processes which all organisms require for life and finding out about fish, crustaceans, molluscs, reptiles and mammals which live in the seas. We will be learning about famous ocean explorers such as Jaques Cousteau and finding out about how they have helped to educate people about the importance of our oceans. We will be tackling a range of artwork including paintings of Atlantis and fish collages and we will build our textile skills by making our own sewn soft fish toys.

 

Our learning in maths this term will include using decimal numbers to solve a range of problems with all number operations and building our shape skills including finding and measuring angles. The focus on Maths fluency will continue with skill building around using a range of operational skill and knowledge to solve problems quickly and efficiently. This will include times table knowledge, which will form a part of all homework this term.

 

Our school values during term 5 are respect determination. It has been brilliant to see all of the children enjoying their learning and making great progress despite the tricky start to the year.

Year 5 Priorities

To improve our writing by using a wide range of punctuation and choosing appropriate descriptive devices.

To build knowledge and understanding of decimal numbers.

 

 

Term 3: Extreme Earth

 

Our Term 3 class topic is Extreme Earth. In English, we will be writing speeches about the plight of refugees and will be tackling an extended piece of story writing based on an animated film called ‘One Small Step’ by Taiko Studios.

 

We will also be learning about some of the natural phenomena that the Earth’s systems create such as tsunami, earthquakes and climate change. We will be learning about what causes these things and thinking about how humans are adapting to cope with them.

 

In science this term, we will be learning all about scientific pioneers and inventors such as Sir David Attenborough, Leonardo Da Vinci as well as learning about Crime Scene Investigations.

 

Our learning in maths this term will include multiplication and fractions.. The focus on Maths fluency will continue with skill building around using a range of operational skill and knowledge to solve problems quickly and efficiently. This will include times table knowledge, which will form a part of all homework this term.

 

Our school values during term 3 are self-respect and curiosity. It has been brilliant to see all of the children enjoying their learning and making great progress.

Year 5 Priorities

To apply times table knowledge to numbers beyond 144.

 

 

Term 2: Titanic Time Travellers

 

This term our class topic is Titanic Time Travellers. In English, we will be writing journals and diaries, non-fiction texts and poetry.

We will also be learning about how the Titanic was built, the types of people who worked and sailed on her as well as learning about the era and the reasons for travelling to America. We will also be making perspective drawings and paintings about the ship.

In science this term, we will be learning all about the properties of materials including magnetism, insulators and conductors.

Our learning in maths this term will include multiplication and area and perimeter. The focus on Maths fluency will continue with skill building around using a range of operational skill and knowledge to solve problems quickly and efficiently. This will include times table knowledge which will form a part of all homework this term.

Our school values during term 1 are kindness and patience. It is fantastic to see all of the children making so much progress and working so hard!

Year 5 Priorities

To improve the clarity of our writing by punctuating, proofreading and editing.

To learn multiplication and division bonds to 144.

 

 

Term 1: Magnificent Mayans

 

This term our class topic is Magnificent Mayans. In English, we will be writing adventure stories creating diaries, writing instructions and poetry. We will be reading Katherine Rundell’s Explorer as our class text this term.

We will also be learning about how the Mayans lived, what they built, the gods they believed in, the food they ate and the art that they created.

In science this term, we will be investigating forces including; gravity, air resistance, water resistance and friction.

Our learning in maths this term will include Place Value, Addition, Statistics and Shape. The focus on Maths fluency will continue with skill building around using a range of operational skill and knowledge to solve problems quickly and efficiently. This will include times table knowledge which will form a part of all homework this term.

Our school values during term 1 are courage and appreciation. The children have made a brilliant start to the year in very unusual circumstances. I am very proud of them.
