Term 6

 

Our Topic this term will be

Hearts and Lanterns

 

In History we will…

  • learn about the lives of two significant women called Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale
  • learn how they have changed national life in terms of nursing and medical care

 

In English we will …

  • write our own stories based on the picture book “Stardust” by Jeanne Willis
  • write a non-fictional instruction text on how to make a birdfeeder

 

In Maths we will …

  • learn to tell the time
  • learn about mass, capacity and temperature

 

In Science we will …

  • learn about food chains
  • learn about farming and where our food comes from
  • learn which food is healthy and which food is unhealthy for us

 

This term our Class Priorities are:

English: Evaluating their writing with the teacher and other pupils

  • re-reading to check that their writing makes sense and that verbs to indicate time are used correctly and consistently, including verbs in the continuous form
  • proof-reading to check for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation (e.g. ends of sentences punctuated correctly)
  • read aloud what they have written with appropriate intonation to make the meaning clear

 

Maths:

  • tell and write the time to five minutes, including quarter past/to the hour and draw the hands on a clock face to show these times
  • Know the number of minutes in an hour and the numbers of hours in a day

Term 5

 

Our Topic this term will be

Minibeasts!

 

In Science we will…

  • learn about different Minibeasts and their habitats
  • go on a Minibeast Hunt
  • build Bug Hotels
  • learn about the Butterfly Lifecycle by observing LIVE caterpillars in our butterfly garden
  • look at how plants are growing and grow our own seeds

 

In English we will …

  • write our own stories based on the picture book “Bee & Me” by Alison Jay
  • write a non-fictional instruction text on how to walk a minibeast

 

In Maths we will …

  • learn about Length & Height
  • learn about Position & Direction

 

 

This term our Class Priorities are:

English: Handwriting

  • Forming lower-case letters of the correct size relative to one another
  • Starting to use some of the diagonal and horizontal strokes needed to join letters and understand which letters, when adjacent to one another, are best left un-joined
  • Writing capital letters and digits of the correct size, orientation and relationship to one another and to lower case letters
  • Using spacing between words that reflects the size of the letters

 

Maths:

  • Recalling and using addition and subtraction facts to 20 fluently and deriving and using related facts up to 100
  • Solving problems involving multiplication and division, using materials, arrays, repeated addition, mental methods and multiplication and division facts, including problems in contexts

Term 4

 

Our Topic this term will be

The Big Smoke!

 

We will be learning about London both now and at the time of the Great Fire of London. We will write stories and poems about visiting different parts of London, write information about London and learn all about why the Great fire of London is a significant part of history.

In our Design and Technology, we will be investigating wheels and Axels and linking this to London Transport!

In the lead up to Easter we will be finding out more about the Easter Story when we learn more about Christianity.

        Within our maths we will be looking at shape and fractions whilst also trying to keep up our fluency practise with multiplication and division!

This term our Class Priorities are:

Writing:

-segmenting spoken words into phonemes and representing these by graphemes, spelling many correctly  

-learning new ways of spelling phonemes for which one or more spellings are already known, and learn some words with each spelling, including a few common homophones  

-learning to spell common exception words  

-learning to spell more words with contracted forms  

-distinguishing between homophones

-add suffixes to spell longer words, e.g. –ment, –ness, –ful, –less, –ly   

 

Maths:

21. Recognise, find, name and write fractions  1/3,  1/4, 2/4  and 3/4  of a length, shape, set of objects or quantity.

22. Write simple fractions for example, 1/2  of 6 = 3 and recognise the equivalence of  2/4 and  1/2.

Term 2: Ice Ice Baby

 

This term we will be learning about cold habitats and linking this with science learning. We will be learning about the animals that live in Antarctica and how they survive the cold! In our geography learning we will be looking at where places are located on maps and globes and how that decides their climate. Then within our history learning we will find out about the treacherous journey that Robert Falcon Scott took to Antarctica.

As well as this, we will be preparing for a digital Nativity, where we will find out more about the Christmas Story.

In our ICT and Art learning we will be exploring digital art!

In maths this term we will be working more on addition and subtraction, as well as developing our understanding of money.

Term 1: Feeling Hot Hot Hot!

 

This term our learning will be based around The Caribbean, and specifically St Lucia. We will be using our geography knowledge and maps skills to find out more about where it is located in the world, whilst learning about the locations of the continents and the oceans. We will be comparing the climate in St Lucia to ours and making links to our positioning in the world. Also, our science learning will help us find out about the types of habitats and animals found in hot countries.

We will also be looking at the food grown and eaten there, and will be tasting and making some of our own creations! Look out for our Pea Pod sale towards the end of the Term!

We will be getting creative too, looking at landscape artists and painting our own Caribbean scenes, listening to and appreciating some Caribbean Reggae music and having a go at a Caribbean dance!

Busy Busy!! Fun, Fun!

As well as all this, we will be writing our own stories and information texts trying to use all our Year 1 writing skills and learning new Year 2 skills. In maths, we will focus on place value, addition and subtraction!

Our PE day this term will be Monday J Children can come dressed in kits.
